I have been asked a couple questions with regards to rosters and ESPN site that I want to address.
First the ESPN site allow for 3 DL spots.
Second... Point of clarifaction about 25 vs. 40 man rosters. The 15 players not on your 25 man roster do not have to be Minor League players. In fact if you wanted to have 15 MLB players and no minor leaguers that would be acceptable. In fact you probably want to have at least a few MLB players on that 15 man "Minor League" roster in case you get some bad luck with 25 man roster players landing on the DL and need to call up replacements.* You do not have to account for any of those 15 players salaries until you call them up.
For Example say some one were to draft Ben sheets and his 10 million dollar salary. They would not be responsible for that money until they called him up and even then they would only be responsible for a pro rated version of that salary. SO if you brought Ben Sheets up to your 25 man roster 1/2 way into the season you would only pay 5 Million. But you would pay 5 million even if you decided to send him back down or release him.
*To send down MLB players they must first clear waivers. MiLB players do not! For example If I were to start Heyward on my 25 man roster because it looks like he will start with the Braves. But lets say he really struggles and the Braves send him back down 1 month into the season. I can then send Heyward down to the 40 man roster without having him pass through waivers. However that only applies when the player you are sending down IS NOT ON A MLB ROSTER.
Any questions?

Quick question and probably already covered but are we paying for our protected prospects all year or is that also only when we call them up (pro-rated)?

You do not "pay" for anyone not on your 25 man roster. IF you bring up a prospect you will pay them 400K as that is the league minimum.
